Blame Canada – Nickelback named number one musical turnoff, Justin Bieber close second

What are your musical turnoffs? The bands you just can’t stand. REALLY can’t stand. You know, that band your date was blabbing on about just before you walked out of the restaurant.

Aw guys, what I do wrong?

Well we were curious to know, so we asked Tastebuds.fm users who responded in their thousands. Each user was allowed to specify up to 12 acts that turned them off. Nickelback – regularly lambasted by the music press – came out on top with almost 13% of users specifying their brand of grunge rock as a turnoff. They certainly polarize opinion; Wikipedia reckons that during the 2000s they were the best selling foreign act in the US behind The Beatles. Yeah. We were surprised too.

Note we said foreign selling act there. For those not on the American continent you may be surprised to learn that Chad and his gang are actually Canadian. The land of ice hockey and maple syrup has produced one of the most hated bands of our time. But it doesn’t stop there – Canadian child prodigy Justin Bieber came a very close second in our study. How can one nation be responsible for these crimes? Summon the ambassador!

We’re just messing… plenty of decent bands have come out of Canada. Arcade Fire for example are the 3rd most popular band on Tastebuds. It’s also important to mention that both Nickelback and Bieber ranked as the top two turnoffs for Canadian users so they’re well aware of the monsters they’ve created.

The other acts that made it into the top 10 auditory annoyances were Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Coldplay, U2, Creed, Katy Perry, Lil Wayne and Britney Spears. Yes, there’s Coldplay again – as well as not having sex with you on a first date, Coldplay fans also dampen your desires. Poor Chris Martin. But to be fair the guy’s a multi-millionaire and goes to bed with Gwyneth Paltrow every night…

Men vs Women

We also took a look at how men and women’s musical turnoffs differed. Interestingly girls were more often turned off by female acts: Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj. Guys – were you just letting these female acts off because they’re easy on the eyes? Tsk tsk. Or do we a hint of jealousy from the ladies?!

Some notable bands that guys were turned off by – but that didn’t make it into women’s top 20 turnoffs – include Oasis, Mumford & Sons, Kings of Leon, Eminem and Kanye West.

Honesty – The Best Policy?

Our view – we think it’s always best to be honest about your taste in music, but perhaps don’t mention your fondness for Nickelback until you’ve got the wedding ring on your finger…

There are plenty of Nickelback fans on Tastebuds, if that’s your bag. Their latest album ‘Here And Now’ is released November 21st.

Notes: Data was captured July to October 2011. Based on responses from 1632 Tastebuds.fm users. Each user was allowed to name up to 12 artists.
