Beck: Song Reader & collaborators
20 songs, including two instrumentals, existing only as a book of sheet music, never before released or recorded – the legendary Beck Hansen brings together a stellar lineup of artists on the Barbican stage this evening to perform his unique album, Song Reader.
So we’ve got a lineup of our own for you – 5 of our all-time favourite collaborations from the genius that is Beck:
5. Seu Jorge – Tropicália (Mario C 2011 Remix)
Collaboration with Brazilian singer-songwriter Seu Jorge for the Red Hot Organization’s charity album, Red Hot+Rio 2 – Latin vibes from the versatile producer.
4. Beck + Liars, St. Vincent & Os Mutantes – Need You Tonight (INXS cover)
Part of Beck’s 2010 Record Club project producing collaborative covers, this time of INXS hit “Need You Tonight”. Annie Clark a.k.a. St. Vincent bringing some understated sexy to 80s aussie rock. Full set of covers from the Record Club here.
3. Bat For Lashes, Beck – Let’s Get Lost
No Youtube video for this one, but here’s a SoundCloud stream – of this Bat for Lashes and Beck duet from the Twilight: Eclipse soundtrack. Anyone remember the scene (we’re not admitting we’ve seen it. All five of them. And read the books.)?
2. Charlotte Gainsbourg – Heaven Can Wait
From the 2010 album, IRM, Beck wrote or co-wrote 12 of the 13 tracks and and produced and mixed the album. This is the lead single, a duet between Beck & Gainsbourg.
And….the all time favourite, beating Bat For Lashes, Charlotte Gainsbourg, St. Vincent AND Seu Jorge:
1. Tobacco – Fresh Hex
Not just for the crazy video – that actually won a competition to crowdsource a fan-created music video for the track – but for the addictiveness of the 1 min 36s collaboration with Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Tom Fec, that leaves you wanting more.
